It's 1957 and a circus troupe and it's star performer May Matthews, one of Australia's finest trapeze artists is making it's way across the desolate South Australian countryside, heading for the Nullabor Plain. Suddenly they are hit by a mob of kangaroos. The convoy collides into itself, the trucks slide from the road, throwing their elephant from the back of a flatbed truck. After the accident, the elephant won't budge. She is hurt and there is no way to tell how badly. They decide they have no option but to stay overnight.

The owner of the property is Bill Yoss. A handsome farmer who lives there with his two young daughters, Pat and Mary-Anne. Their once quiet lives are thrown into chaos when the circus sets up camp on their farm. It's like living with rats and things have started going missing from the house...

Despite all that, something has stirred in Bill. He begins to fall in love with the most unlikely of candidates - the beguiling and beautiful May. She is unlike any woman Bill has ever seen before. As love blooms between the two they are torn between their vastly different worlds. Bill can't abandon his farm and May has never lived outside of the circus and would never leave. Plus. She hates the country.

The show must go on and the circus must always keep moving. It is inevitable that their lives will tear these lovers apart. Can their love survive?
